Using Biometrics to Prevent Duplicate Medical Records and Improve Patient Data Integrity

Biometric Matching Types

The ONLY way to prevent duplicate medical records and improve patient data integrity with biometrics is to implement a system that, during patient enrollment, compares a captured template against ALL stored templates in the biometric database. This is known as a “one-to-many” (1:N) comparison. It’s also the only way to ensure high levels of data integrity across the HIE or IDN.

Understanding the differences in biometric matching is vital if you expect the system to prevent duplicate medical records and improve medical record data integrity.

Verification

A verification system authenticates a person’s identity by comparing a captured biometric template (from a biometric device or latent image) with a biometric template that is pre-stored in a system database (enrollment template). It conducts a one-to-one (1:1) comparison to determine whether the identity claimed by the individual is true. A verification system simply rejects or accepts the submitted claim of identity based on this comparison. Therefore, 1:1 verification requires the input of some personally identifiable credential (e.g. PIN, date of birth, gender, social security number, etc.) in addition to the captured biometric template. This credential points to a specific enrollment template in the database.

1:Few Segmented Identification

A 1:Few segmented identification system compares a captured biometric template against a portion of the total biometric database; hence, a credential needs to be provided prior to the biometric scan to determine which templates should be compared against. For example, a patient might provide a date of birth prior to scanning. The biometric system would then compare the captured template against only those templates that share the same birth date.

One-to-many identification compares the captured biometric template against all stored templates. No other information is required besides the biometric scan. This biometric matching type answers the question, “who are you?”

1:N matching is a true de-duplication mechanism and the only way to prevent duplicate patient records and improve patient data integrity.
